Talking Robots group involved in the construction of the German Rescue Robotics Center (A-DRZ)

On 6 December 2018, the kick-off for the project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the establishment of a competence center for robotic systems in hostile environments will take place in Dortmund. The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is one of twelve core partners in the fields of security, research, and industry. The project will be coordinated by the fire brigade and rescue technology department of the Dortmund fire brigade and planned for four years.

No less than three DFKI research areas are involved in the project: the research group Multilingual Speech Technologies (MLT), here especially the Talking Robots team, the Institute of Information Systems at DFKI (IWi) and the Educational Technology Lab (EdTec). The competencies of these three research groups will be led by Dr. Ivana Kruijff-Korbayová (MLT).

During previous missions in real catastrophic scenarios, robots were used as fully-teleoperated tools. However, research and development aimed at a collaboration between humans and robots, in which robot operators are relieved by autonomous assistance functions. With greater autonomy, more complex tasks can be accomplished in a larger human-robot mission team. In order for robotic tools to become truly intelligent agents who actively participate in a mission, they must have a structural understanding of what is going on in a mission, what the goals are, what subtasks a human-robot team is performing, and with what strategic concept the team implements them. Only with this understanding can the robotic systems fulfill their (partial) tasks in a targeted manner and meaningfully take initiative. Despite the autonomous sub-activities, the human operators retain the coordination and control at all times.

As part of A-DRZ, the Talking Robots team will continue its work performed in the TRADR project, i.e. analysing the team communication to derive information regarding the mission status.
